She was a sports reporter for some of the biggest media outlets across the nation. Her time at The Washington Post was spent covering multiple Olympics, Grand Slam Tennis as well as basketball and football. Nichols was awarded two Emmy Awards during her nine-year time with ESPN as well as being featured on many of the network's most popular shows like NFL Countdown or SportsCenter, moved to ESPN following the year 2004. She was also one of the networks' Monday Night Football broadcasts as reporter on the sidelines. She then moved to CNN as well as Turner Sports. Through the history of 42 years of this award, it was the first time that an individual woman was one of the nominees.
